Burqa Banning - Don't

The government of France is looking into the legality of banning face-covering veils - the infamous burqa and similar attire. Sarko thinks that these veils have no place in French society and should be banned as they"debase women".

Indeed the burqa and veils have become inexorably linked with serious, demeaning and shameful repression of women's rights. The Taliban, for example, are a sickening bunch of power hungry men that have absolutely no right to suppress women's rights. Illegal behaviour in France as it should be.

It is my deep belief, however, that people need to have the freedom to live their lives, their dreams and to, consequently, fail or succeed. They need the right to move to a different city, province, country or continent to start anew or build a better future for themselves. To marry, divorce and love whomever they want. To read, listen to and watch whomever they please. To wear whatever they want to - be it a dress that is 1 mm below the crotch, a tattoo on the tit, hair dyed purple, blue and pink or a veil in front of their face.

I believe this so long as they are free to start and stop wearing them - on their schedule and no one else's. Freedom. The burqa is not the problem. The veil is not the issue. The lack of freedom that these items have been linked to is what needs to be banned.

France is a free country. People can strike. They can vote. They can march on the streets. They are the model revolutionaries. They can wear the short skirts, the tattoos, the dyed hair and, today anyway, the veil. I say preserve a woman's right to her freedom. Provide shelter and safe haven to those who live in France and want out of the abusive relationships they might be in. Throw the abusing husbands in the slammer for limiting their wives' and daughters' rights to education, free speech and expression in the same way you prosecute sexual and physical abuse.

Don't ban a piece of clothing and fall prey to popular slander that is running rampant.

Remember.....

1. The world has no effective borders anymore. You can try to fence, patrol and police them but it is a futile effort. Whether virtually or physically, the world's cultures are going to cross-pollinate. You can't keep a pollen out of a house. You can't keep a seed from germinating in the neighbour's farm.

2. People of the Earth are migrating more and more. Being white, brown, black, yellow, red or beige skinned means less and less as less and less of us are.

3. Governments should stay out of regulating music, spoken and written word, clothing, food and drink, sexuality and spirituality. Rather they should stick to defending the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to ensure that their citizens are free. Period.

Let me know what you think about what you have just read. Please and thanks!
