Flushing Water Away

My bare cheeks feel the swish of water below them.  Flush.  I try to sit still to avoid the eye's attention.  But boy is it sensitive to movement.  I barely move and, swish, another flush.  Gosh.  How can I be statue-like while doing my "business"?  The final, and expected, final movement occurs as I stand.

Looking back and down at the green lettering on the back of the white porcelain seat, below the eye, I see a marking - 6 LPF.  This would make it a newer model loo as it only uses six litres per flush (LPF).  The problem is that at every visit you actually end up using a minimum of eighteen litres.  So much for efficiency.

I head back to my desk, relieved to be out of the eye's gaze.  An email appears in my inbox.  It is an article from Scientific American, dated April 22, 2009 and entitled "Could Food Shortages Bring Down Civilization".  In it there is a section on water shortages.  Fossil aquifers that do not get replenished and are vital to agriculture.  Falling water tables due to the fact that irrigation and pumps are draining water faster than it is being replenished.  Melting glaciers.  The result is dropping yields of important grains such as rice and wheat - two of the three staple cereals of the world (maize being the third).

We waste a lot of water in this world.  Alfalfa sprout farms in arid California.  Golf courses in Nevada.  Water sprinklers turning on while it is raining.

And toilets that flush three times per visit.  I think I'd rather pull the chain manually and risk catching the cooties.

Ash Barty

The news that Ash Barty has taken the decision to retire at the age of 25 has caused many people to react.  Some understand, others question, others accuse.   Her decision has touched off a few ideas of my own. When is enough actually enough?  When do we decide we have enough?  When can we stop and just be content with what we have?
